MGG prepared me to actively practice the track two diplomacy and become a bridge builder between European and Chinese Climate Policy

MGG not only offered the platform to me to engage with development professionals and counterparts in partner institutions, but also equipped me with the policy savvy and global governance mindset to effectively analyze and discuss policy issues.”

Yanzhu Zhang, China, Policy Advise at Foreign Environmental Cooperation Center of Ministry of Ecology and Environment, MGG Academy 2020

Yanzhu's change story:

On one hand, as a staff working in the Foreign Environmental Cooperation Center of Ministry of Ecology and Environment of China, I am dedicated to foster and facilitate bilateral or multilateral cooperation with global partners to solve global environmental challenges such as climate change; One the other hand, while China is going global and increasingly shaping global order, many Chinese civil servants are not very skilled in dealing with western counterparts, and not able to tell China’s story in a sophisticated way using international language/international discourse. In fact, in 2021, Chinese President Xi also acknowledged the importance of track-2 diplomacy and allowing academics and professionals to engage directly with discussion or debates in international space. Therefore, I feel I benefited from MGG Academy and later on the MGG network to actively participate in the international debate on pressing policy issues, particularly issues relevant to China’s role in the world and sustainable development.

How has the MGG Network helped you to make the change happen?

The MGG not only offered the platform to me to engage with development professionals and counterparts in partner institutions, but also equipped me with the policy savvy and global governance mindset to effectively analyze and discuss policy issues.
