A sustainable future is possible

"Through MGG I have learned to estimate what are sustainable practices, that you need a comprehensive picture of the challenge, including all perspectives of actors involved and a vision that change towards a sustainable future is possible"

Garry Armando Reagen, Indonesia, Internal Audit Manager, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), MGG 2019

Garry's change story:

When applying to the MGG Academy I was working in the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of Indonesia. I was employed in the division oil and gas, before that I have been working in the division coal. After the Academy I was assigned to the division renewable energies. This gave me a full picture of energy policies in Indonesia. Together with the experiences I have made in the MGG Academy, I realised that many practices in the energy sector lack a comprehensive view of all involved parties. Many decisions are oriented to satisfy certain parties, such as electoral behaviour instead of sustainability.

This made me decide to go for a PhD elaborating this comprehensive picture. By doing a PhD, I expect that I have a neutral position, therefore, I have an expectation to get in touch directly with stakeholders who give significant influence in making policies, such as politicians, businessmen or entrepreneurs, companies, and academics. By interacting with them, I want to know their point of view on renewable energy development.  I just received a Fulbright scholarship as a Principal Candidate to pursue my PhD on the question of how to establish renewable energy in a sustainable way in developing countries. I want to make sustainable improvements in the government in the area of renewable energies. Therefore, by having a full picture from companies, members of the parliament, and all other relevant actors, sustainable solutions can be developed in a form of policy.
