Pioneering Diversity for Global Climate Resilience

„Being part of the MGG Academy provided me more insights on how it is important to have different strategies, approaches, and tools to involve all the different stakeholders and audiences, taking into consideration diversity is the mainstreaming not the exception.“
Carlos Eduardo Lustosa da Costa, Director of Environmental Audit Department, Brazilian Court of Audit, Supervisor of the global initiative "The Climate Scanner", MGG 2022
Carlos' change story:
The MGG Academy made my mind and perspectives broader and richer. Currently my main project is the ClimateScanner initiative, a global project which aims to provide a technical panorama on how national governments are managing climate crisis. Audit Institutions can play a critical role in promoting and fostering the efficiency, accountability, effectiveness, and transparency of public administration as well as demanding the improvement of public policies related to climate change and environmental issues. Since climate change is a cross-cutting topic, ClimateScanner touches upon all the 17 SDGs.
I insisted, because of MGG, to have a diversity of countries in the executive group, in terms of nations' size, vulnerability, wealth, CO2 emitter, geographic location etc. Now the joint project of National Audit Insitutions is composed by 17 countries with the objective to assess national governments' actions to tackle climate crisis. I insisted to have many countries from Asia and the global south on board in the initiative. Next year, we expect to have more than 100 countries applying the ClimateScanner tool which will make it possible to elaborate a global panorama about gaps, strengths, good-practices and challenges national governments may face.
My other change story is about an MGG collaboration project. I had the opportunity to write a paper (The Role of Transnational Networks and Professional Exchanges in Supporting an Integrated Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals) for United Nations publication about MGG, in collaboration with two colleagues from my batch, Isabela Blumm and Simran Dhingra. This paper is part of the World Public Sector Report (WPSR). We delved into the experience of the MGG Academy and how it contributes to SDG implementation by mobilizing, connecting, and enhancing global expertise and promoting practical solutions for sustainable development.
