Alighning all government expenditures in Indonesia with the SDGs

„My transformative experience with MGG reshaped my understanding of global interconnectedness and underscored the imperativeness of cross-sectoral cooperation. In 2020, in the Ministry of Finance (Indonesia), I supported the implementation of a regulation that mandated the alignment of all government investments with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and specific targets.“

Radhitiono Wickasono, Indonesia, MGG 2018, Lecturer at the State Finance Polytechnic STAN

 Radhitiono's change story:

After going through the MGG Academy, I became, together with my team the driving force behind strategic projects aimed at embedding sustainability into government frameworks. In 2020, I secured second place for Outstanding Employee within the Ministry of Finance by championing a groundbreaking regulation that mandated the alignment of all government investments with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and specific targets. This directive was successfully promulgated later that year. Expanding on this, in 2022 we executed a comprehensive mapping strategy to ensure State-Owned Enterprises; investments align cohesively with SDGs. Identifying several State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) as high-intensity carbon emitters, I orchestrated the formulation of precise guidelines and regulatory frameworks aimed at transitioning these entities toward a carbon-neutral operational model, complete with quantifiable reduction targets.
Simultaneously, we delivered seminal Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) regulations to fortify the societal impact of governmental investments vis-à-vis SDGs.

Finally, we have spearheaded cross-party collaborations aimed at achieving the 2030 SDG targets, particularly in the realm of carbon emissions. This trajectory of accomplishments signifies not just technical expertise, but a sensitivity to the nexus of fiscal responsibility, societal well-being, and environmental sustainability. Understanding the nature of institutional integrity, my endeavors have also encompassed the augmentation of transparency and accountability mechanisms within organizational structures. This has been achieved through the strategic development of regulations
aimed at institutionalizing fairness, transparency, and governance excellence.

Overall, the projects have initiated a systemic shift toward sustainability, better governance, and equitable development across key stakeholders:

- State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) have shown a marked reduction in carbon emissions and improved operational efficiencies.
- Regulatory bodies have implemented stronger governance frameworks, increasing public trust and data-driven decision-making.
- International financial institutions are more tightly integrated with domestic sustainability goals, enhancing co-financing efficacy.
- The general populace exhibits heightened awareness and engagement in sustainable practices.
- Local governments are more empowered, contributing to context-specific project success.
- Environmental advocacy groups are actively involved in monitoring and pushing for sustainable outcomes.
- Economic sectors have experienced growth with new employment opportunities, and there is a pervasive culture of transparency and accountability across public and private sectors.
